Guide to Buying a Sewing Machine

We have many queries submitted to us each week asking for advice about buying sewing machines; what type of machine, what brand, what features to look for etc etc. ConsumerReports.org has published a handy little guide online explaining most of the things you need to know before you buy a machine. It's worth spending the time reading their article as it could save you a lot of heartache and hassle if you buy the wrong machine for your needs. As an extra, if you're a member of ConsumerReports.org you can read their latest ratings on sewing machines and their recommended buys... well worth the membership!

Nicely written guide. What about its usefulness.. most features they list are included in modern machines by default. Like show me a modern sewing machine that doesn't have a needle threader or feed-dog adjustment.

And brands. The author kindly added a link to Brother (unlike other brands that have only descriptions) but hasn't even mentioned Bernina which is one of top European brands well-known for its quality.

I am going to go ahead and have to agree with the previous comment.

Guides are ok but I have read so much good/bad reviews about the same machine that I'm back to square one. I am trying to help my mother (who is 73) choose a new sewing machine. She does some normal sewing and also likes to quilt. She currently has a Kenmore 385 (I think) and I think she wants a little bit more. She is on a budget so I don't think she wants to go over $250. I think for her sake and my sanity she needs to stay away from the computerized machines. I am not a sewer so I would be of little help. I have narrowed it down to three. The Janome Magnolia 7381, Janome Jem Gold 660, and Singer Confidence 7469Q. Are any of these a good choice or is there another one out there that is better? Thanks!
